The emerald, the favorite gem of rulers, took a strong position in the precious hierarchy as early as ancient times, bewitching people with its deep spring color—emanating life and harmony.  It helped Nostradamus to see the future and the Emperor Nero watched the gladiator fights through the prism of the precious stone.  The Queen of the Nile found the emerald to be the only gift of nature that was able to compete with her beauty, and the Romans considered it to be an element of Mercury, the God of trade and travel.
