Bayco Featured on The Gem Standard

April 26, 2013

New York-based Bayco has unveiled a 206 carat Colombian emerald, which they have dubbed the ‘Imperial Emerald’, at Baselworld 2013. The stone is remarkable for its clarity given the size, as well as uniform color throughout. Owners Moris and Giacomo Hadjibay bought the stone recently in a private sale from a collector who owned it for 40 years and are not revealing how much they paid for it. Something to consider: the world auction record for an emerald is US$6.5 million for Elizabeth Taylor’s 24.33 carat Bulgari brooch, sold by Christie’s in December 2011. No doubt the aura of Taylor bumped up the price, but if this stone went to auction it would surely shatter that record.
